Arthur C. Clarke

Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn.

*sigh* He was getting old and not in great health so it's not unexpected, but still. I was really hoping to somehow find a way to meet him before this happened. I got hooked on his books after reading "Childhood's End" when I was in around 6th grade and read everything I could get my hands on by him. This is definitely a major loss to science fiction and in general.

I got the breaking news alert on my watch while I was at lunch.

I wasn't a big fan of Clarke, but I was always annoyed that I missed a chance to meet him. In 1981 my ship visited Sri Lanka and while I was ashore having fun Clarke came and visited our ship. (USN ships didn't often vistit there as we had no base there.) He was gone by the time I returned to the ship and only learned of it afterwards. I've been meanign to re-read RAMA now I gotta get to it.

Damn, that was close! Too bad! I'm sure it must have been frustrating. Even if you're not a big fan of him, he's still one of the biggest names in science fiction. And who hasn't heard of 2001? Except maybe the one very young girl in my writing class who was bragging about never having seen The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars.;)

I think I might have to go back and re-read some of his books now too!
