It's interesting how the whole "As the LiveJournal Turns" situation currently going on has me checking in here a lot more. Well, since I'm checking in I might as well be posting here more.

I'm at work now waiting for a developer to call me, so I can explain a javascript/Actionscript fix that SHOULD be really simple but they keep trying to come back and say it can't be done. All they have to do is pass in a variable and I'll take care of the Actionscript (I like the fact that I've become the resident Actionscript guru here:). If only I could do more of it, though!). Well, this person was supposed to call me and I've been waiting a while now and still no call. I just hope this person knows what they're doing and understands what I'm trying to tell them.

Unfortunately, dealing with outside contractors has shown me over the years exactly WHY Web Developers have such a bad name. There are way too many people who really DON'T know what they're doing and/or write sloppy unmaintainable code. Outside contractors are especially guilty of this because they usually DON'T have to maintain it when they're done, and the people who do have to get stuck with their mess. And the users get stuck downloading bloated, slow web pages. *sigh* Unfortunately, less and less comapnies even care about clean code or download times.

This leads me to another thing. I'm currently taking Computer Science classes at West Los Angeles College, a local community college. UCLA wouldn't let me go for a second bachelors and this is close to me, seemed to have a halfway decent Computer Science program, and at $18 a credit you can't really beat the price! The problem is I'm seeing a lot of people who remind me of one of the things I always hated in HS and college, the people who always ask a lot of questions, or just don't understand things too quickly, and generally slow down the class. I've always understood things pretty much right away, and when the teachers go over things again and again it annoys/bores me. One thing I really liked about UCLA Extension is how a teacher would ask if there were any questions and there were dead silence.

So the one thing about this that bothers me is, why is it that people like that who just stick it out and get that little piece of paper that says they have a 4 years Computer Science degree get taken a lot more seriously than me, just because my bachelors was in Liberal Studies and I'm just a 'web developer'? I probably know a lot more about programming than a lot of Computer Science majors. That's why I'm determined to get myself one of those pieces of paper just to prove that I DO know what I'm doing. I'm still not sure whether an AA from this school will help, but if it's going to take over a year to be able to go to UCLA for a Masters anyway and it's not going to take too many classes maybe I can do it just so I can say I have it.

Well, I'm definitely not going to let NOT having the little piece of paper stop me from doing what I really want to be doing:).

P.S. The developer just called. Fortunately he does sound like he knows what he's doing:). Now I just need to get the FLAs to make the changes for this to work.
