I give up

O.K. If I ever want to get back on here I can't do it with probably a year's worth of missed posts on my friends page here (or whatever is there before it cuts off). So let me know if I missed anything important and I might check a few people but for the most part assume I missed everything here for the past year. I just had to dump close to a gig of backlogged e-mail so i guess I need to do the same thing here.

BTW, it's a little easier for me to keep up on Facebook so it you're on there please add me as a friend.:) Oh, and you can also follow me on Twitter.

There's a lot of interesting stuff going on right now, but I'll post more later.

*sigh*

Well, the last few months have been pretty bad (it seems to be going around lately) and today was a serious day from hell. I was upset about some problems with a friend of mine, got 3 hours of sleep last night, had an interview with someone for the Computer Science Honor Society but never managed to meet up with him, and then got a parking ticket because I forgot to put the temporary parking permit back up this morning. And then came the final top for the day...

I'm being let go from my job. The 31st is my last day. It's partially they don't have another project to put me on and partially just the class situation has been a lot more difficult than I expected and I really haven't been able to manage 40 hours a week. It's not completely unexpected because I could tell they were getting frustrated with me. They're still really happy with me and will give me a great recommendation and are willing to use me on contract jobs, but they're too small a company to really keep me on full time, and now I need to find other work. And now I know I really CAN'T in good faith even consider any full time jobs because I know I can't do it. In fact I found out a core requirement I was hoping to get appealed was denied so now I have to take 10 credits in the fall if I want to graduate in May, which is definitely not conducive to a full time job.

Ironically enough this was probably the least stressful thing to go wrong today, I guess because it does help my stress level, since my classes this semester have not been going well and I can really use the extra time to focus on them.

So now I'm looking again, so if anyone knows of any part time contract work in the Los Angeles area let me know. And now I do have 3 1/2 months of heavy Actionscript 3 game programming experience, with a really impressive game to add to my portfolio that I'll be finishing up this week and that hopefully will be live not much after that so I can finally show it off!

I won't go into the other nasty stuff going on right now, but next week I'll probably post about the car accident nightmare of the past month and a half (I'm going to wait until AFTER my small claims court date just to be safe).
sharan: (me@work)
I don't want to post anything just yet until I make a final decision but it's been a busy week and I should have some really big news to post here by the end of next week:).

Right now I've got a lot going on, including a project for class that's now overdue (my team keeps getting 3rd members that seem to vanish off the face of the Earth and not contribute to the projects, unfortunately) and a midterm on Tuesday. And I never realized quite how much looking for work really IS a full time job until now. So I haven't checked in for a while and will have a lot of catching up to do soon.

Update

There's been a lot of stuff going on lately that I haven't posted about here, so I thought maybe it was time for an update. I just finished a serious Semester From Hell. So bad, in fact, that I have decided not to go for the masters at USC. I'm really fed up with the whole student group projects thing, and the masters is very project heavy. Besides, I've realized I probably don't even need the masters to get a game programming job. If I do anything (and I suspect I'll take some time off first) I will probably do something more on the music/audio side, since I really do want to specialize in game audio.

Things outside of class haven't been so great either. As I posted the Universal job ended, and I've had some promising leads but so far I'm still unemployed (breaking my record of being unemployed for 1 month in the middle of the dot com crash). I had an interview at a game company on Friday, and I have a phone interview for contract work tomorrow, so hopefully something will happen.

On top of everything, a couple of months ago Justin announced that he was moving out. After being roommates for over 6 years I'm understandably not too happy, and I miss him and the cats (he took 3 of them, including Kitty Cat, who had decided he was my cat and was sleeping on my bed every night (I really miss him:(). Also having my rent double just when I lost my job did not exactly help matters at all. I don't want another roommate, though, and I couldn't anyway because we cleared out the storage locker so this place is pretty full. It's going to take a while to get things straightened out even now that classes are over.

Also, Kitty's been diagnosed with a bunch of medical problems lately. He spent a week at an emergency hospital and was diagnosed with chronic renal failure. Then more recently the doctor was worried about him breathing heavily and they thought he had heart problems. They did tests and his heart was in the normal range but he had a lump in his lung. He's been on antibiotics and he seems to be breathing better, so it may just have been an infection. But his heart was still beating really fast so the doctor gave him heart medication to slow his heart down, and it seems to have done wonders, since he's more active and alert than I've seen him in years (if ever). Fortunately he's adjusted well to the other cats leaving. He seems to like having the place to himself. The other cats, on the other hand, were totally traumatized by the move.

With all this chaos and some unrelated crap going on I can't really talk about it's really starting to look like Baycon probably won't be happening. I don't even know if Justin's going and if he doesn't go I definitely can't afford it. Plus, finding a pet sitter to deal with all Kitty's medical needs at the last minute would not be easy.

Yesterday I decided to get out of the house and went to a meeting of the Greater Los Angeles Writer's Society, which was nice. They were talking about Writers of the Future and showed a DVD which featured an interview with [livejournal.com profile] edgreen86, among other people. I even got a copy of the dvd.

I did also get to go see Asia again at the Canyon Club a couple of weeks ago, which was nice. Another great show! But I also had to unfortunately miss Symphony X for financial reasons. I already had the Asia tickets at least.

So there's been a lot going on, including a lot of stuff that hasn't been fun. But I'll get through it eventually. *sigh* At least I survived another semester. And unless I decide to take a full time game job and cut back my classes I'll actually be graduating in December! At this point I'm really looking forward to this being over with.

I just thought I'd post a quick update. Kitty came home Friday night and is doing well. I was really worried when he went nuts when they were trying to show me how to do the subcutaneous fluids at the vet, but it turns out that as long as I warm the fluids first and he gets lots of petting and attention while it happens he's actually really good about it. *whew!* He goes in to my regular vet Friday morning, so I'll know more then.

Classes also started this week and are looking good so far. Today I actually had my first class in "Intro to Fiction Writing" (since I finally decided to FORCE myself back into writing). It turns out the teacher likes SF too (William Gibson and Roger Zelazny), so that's nice!

I'm also telling all my teachers that I'll be in San Francisco at the Game Developer's Conference. My roommate and most of the rest of Infinite Monkey Factory are flying up Tuesday afternoon, but I really can't afford to miss 2 of my Game Hardware Architectures classes (which should be interesting, since it looks like we'll be learning how to program for the PS3/cell processor!). So I'm flying up first thing Wednesday morning instead.

I've also done some work on another New Years Resolution, trying to do something about getting over the long time fear of singing in public (it goes back to a bad experience with a lousy sound system at my brother's bar mitzvah - before that I was in chorus for 8 years, even made all county chorus once, and always LOVED to sing). I finally tried out Karaoke Revolution, Rock Band, and now Singstar (although I think I prefer Karaoke Revolution - it's more "fun"), and found a game that I not only enjoy, but it's the only game (other than maybe puzzle games) I've ever been able to BEAT on expert mode, and even get platinum on. I can still do the singing even if I am badly out of practice. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll either take a singing class at USC or maybe just take private singing lessons.

I also got this cool little GPS when I realized that it just might help me navigate rush hour traffic when I'm trying to get to my 6:30pm or 5pm classes on Mondays and Tuesdays. This thing's nice, and so tiny it's actually smaller than my Palm Z22. It even works for walking or bicycling.

Oh, and I'm writing on my new laptop, a Thinkpad X61 tablet convertible. I was hoping to wait until the summer to upgrade but my 3 1/2 year old Thinkpad R50p decided to force the issue a few weeks ago when the network card died. This one's going to be MUCH nicer for taking notes in class with, though. It's been an expensive year.

Of course I've discovered the joy of Vista (yeah, I know, but apparently XP tablet edition sucks even worse). Apparently I can't open a popup window without Firefox crashing, so no preview for me here. (UPDATE: problem solved! It was the Thinkpad Password Manager Firefox extension that just got installed crashing Firefox. I disabled it and popups work again!)

Well, I have to go get some stuff done, take care of Kitty, and get to sleep, since I have a 1pm class tomorrow and can't afford to oversleep or I'll have NO time to work.

I just printed out the last take-home final and just have to get it in to the Anthropology office by 10am tomorrow morning and I'm all done! *WHEW!* I am SO glad this semester's over!

I'll post more updates later, although I'm also going to be putting in a lot of overtime at work over the next 3 or so weeks until it all starts over again. It's been an insane past few months!

*WHEW!*

Remind me not to stay away from this place for 3+ weeks. My friends list doesn't even go back that far and it took forever to catch up, but I did what I could. But it's been a busy past few weeks! Just for a quick update:

My roommate signed a 6 month contract and I'm now working full time for him (at least until classes start in...about a week *ouch* Where did the summer go?).

I went to NY for over a week for my cousin's wedding, survived a tornado in Brooklyn (actually not near me, but it brought the NYC transit system to a screeching halt and kept me from making it into NYC at all while I was there, which sucked because there were people - some of them on here - who I wanted to see but wasn't able to. I didn't even have time to call some of them, who I was planning on calling if I was getting in there:(.), got to see Rick Springfield and Eddie Money at the North Fork Theater (formerly Westbury Music Hall) and the Evolution Journey Tribute in a free concert in Hicksville, saw one old friend I hadn't seen in years who I recently got back in touch with, and ran into another old friend at a drugstore who I'd lost touch with for years.

And on top of that I'm trying to get in as many work hours as possible while I still can and actually do some work on Rockers Online.

Well, I better get to work but I figured I'd post at least a quick update. I suspect I'll be too busy to check in as regularly as I would like.
sharan: (Rockers Online)
Damn, I still have so much I want to do this summer and there are only about 6 weeks left before it all starts over again with the classes! And the next few weeks will be busy, since I'm seeing Rush at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday, Dream Theater at the Gibson Amphitheater on Friday, heading to either Las Vegas or Comicon for the weekend (I'm not sure which yet), seeing Symphony X the following Tuesday (maybe Monday too if we're back and I feel up to the trek down to Anaheim. EDIT: apparently the Anaheim show just got moved to Santa Ana), and then I head to NY on Thursday the 2nd for 9 days. I'm exhausted just thinking about it!

In other news, when I head off to NY I'll also be headed back to only occasional work status at the current job as I go back to work for my roommate's company. He just signed a 6 month contract for a website with a 3d game component that should be interesting! If you know any good programmers in the L.A. area (or are one) let me know, since he's going to be hiring!

There's also news on the Rockers Online front. I finally got fed up with my old web host screwing up my site and my e-mail and switched to a new one. Then I fixed a few bugs (including my rss feed, which I had no idea was down for so long, and my forum activation, which the old host broke by changing the server on me). Last weekend I finally added the first new band in years, Queensryche (and damn, do they have a lot of sites devoted to them!). I think it's probably safe to say I now have the most comprehensive list of links on the band on the net:). Also my roommate decided as a test to pay someone to write up news for my site for a month to see if it increases traffic, and I'm on the 3rd day of that (so there will actually be things posted to [livejournal.com profile] rockersonline).

Of all my goals for the summer, the one I was most on track for (at least until I blew it last week and I'm hoping to make up the difference this week) is reading at least 1 book a week. I finally finished "The Harlequin" By Laurell K. Hamilton this morning and will be working on the new Demon Hunting Soccer Mom book by Julie Kenner next. Now those are fun books! They really are like if Buffy retired and got married and had kids and suddenly started getting attacked by vampires again. It should be a quick read so maybe I'll make 2 books this week:).

I think I finally figured out what the problem is with the new Laurell K. Hamilton books. My opinions here... )

Update

Well, the semester's over, and the Shrek game is done (and out! So you should be able to buy it right now!), and things are finally going to calm down a little and go back to "normal". I have a little time while waiting for someone to get back to me, so I thought I'd do a quick update on what's been going on.

Well, it was a really rough semester, but as you can tell from the last post things worked out in the end! I was basically working on 3 different games (2 for classes plus the Shrek game), and it wasn't easy, even though I wound up dropping a class. I was really worried about that Algorithms class since I blew both quizzes, but I did well enough on the midterm and final that I got a B after all, which was a relief.

It was really weird this past weekend since I kept thinking I should be doing something and then remembering I didn't HAVE to. Of course I probably SHOULD have been doing things like catching up on some really overdue e-mails (even to at least 1 person here), but I guess I needed a weekend off. I've been trying to get stuff done during the week but one thing after another keeps getting in the way. Yesterday we got to go to a private screening of Shrek The Third, since we worked on the game. I won't give any spoilers, but it's a fun movie and worth seeing!

Afterward to avoid traffic we stopped by Fry's in Burbank, and I finally got the parts for a long overdue new computer. We were up until 3am putting it together, so I'm exhausted today. Hopefully now Lord of the Rings Online won't be quite so laggy (it actually runs better on my laptop than my old desktop strangely enough), which would help since I signed up for a lifetime membership (I really hate paying monthly fees, so now I just have to make sure I play it for at least 2 years to get my money's worth:)).

Today I finally realized I should check my grades, which I just posted. There was also bad news today, since Lloyd Alexander died (I loved his books when I was a kid!), and Veronica Mars got canceled (just when I finally found a worthy successor to Buffy. I just hope Heroes is renewed and not opposite 24 next year).

Next week is also Baycon, so I'll be there. And there's a bunch of other stuff happening in the near future. But at least I'm finally getting a break, and I've been celebrating with my new XBox 360 Elite, courtesy of Amazon. Maybe some day I'll even get a Wii, but I'm starting to think they're a myth, since I sure can't find one for sale anywhere!
sharan: (Default)
Well, since I'm still waiting around for my computer to search my files for something I might as well post about the insane past couple of weeks I've had since GDC. Adventures in Surround Sound )
sharan: (Default)
I've been so busy I only just realized I missed an anniversary a couple of weeks ago. What happened 10 years ago... )

I'm probably about a week behind on catching up on reading my friends page again, but what else is new? Things should let up after mid-April when this game I'm working on is done. I also created a myspace account (sharangv) purely to keep track of all the bands on there, but I definitely prefer this place! There's something really slimy about that place, and I had to require people to know my last name or e-mail address to add me as a friend to cut down on the spam (what is it a contest to add as many total strangers you have nothing in common with as possible to your friends list there?). If you're on my friends list here I already know you and you probably already know my last name and can add me there, but I plan on spending less time there than I do here. If nothing else, here I don't have to worry about going blind from staring at too many godawfully fugly* and unreadable web designs;).

* f***ing ugly
sharan: (bill the cat)
The license plate of the mack truck that hit me was something like SPR07@USC. Between that and work I wouldn't expect to see much of me until May.

In fact this semester's so busy I've had to decide I can't really afford the time to go to NY for spring break, and will stay home and work full time that week instead. Which means I'll miss Lunacon, unfortunately:(. I will be at GDC the week before that, though.

I actually had to drop my Advanced Writing class, and the semester's still going to be rough even without that.

Damn, I haven't checked here in way too long. For some weird reason over the past few weeks it's felt like things have gotten totally out of control. I'm BARELY managing to get things done at the last minute. It's been bad even for me, and I just haven't been getting much done on weekends. Damn, I need a vacation or something.

Well, spring break is coming up in another week, and I'll be heading to NY for the first time in over 2 years, and going to Lunacon (anyone going there have hotel space available?;) What? Me plan ahead and have that settled already? Of course not!). The week after that is GDC, so I'll be missing a few days of class/work for that too. I also started the new job at ISI which should save me about 6-8 hours a week commute time, which certainly won't hurt! It was sad leaving Universal, but I think this is for the best. I'm a little worried because between the lack of sleep this week and not feeling well I slept in my car for way too long yesterday and got in to work late, which wasn't good. I've also been dealing with last-minute end of Cobra dental stuff, barely making a scholarship deadline (and possibly screwing up a Linear Algebra midterm in the process because I forgot I was supposed to hand it in BEFORE the midterm), barely making a couple of financial aid deadlines, etc. And yesterday I got out to my car to find out it wouldn't start. It did eventually start (right after I got off the phone with the mechanic) but after that I just dropped off the car there and had to borrow my roommate's car to get in to class today (I also lost my last chance to get my teeth cleaned). And strangely enough I saw an e-mail eariler in the day that Mercury just went retrograde. Coincidence?;)

Well, at least this Week from Hell is almost over! And I really need to spend some time this weekend getting my act together.

BTW, I haven't had time to read my friends list in weeks.:( Hopefully I'll fix that soon, but I'll probably miss a lot. Thank God for friends filters!

UPDATE: I am SO not having a good day. Shortly after posting this it started raining (I was outside using my laptop) and I can't use my laptop now until it dries out. And another disaster caused me to accidentally put my NGage into a sink full of water and I may have destroyed that too. I have a second ngage around here somewhere at least but this REALLY sucks:(.
